Summary

This lesson is about learning a tool for making colored stickers. First, students should try out their own technique and think about what problems might arise when making colored stickers with the vinyl cutter. You will then receive a ruler template with which you can solve the same task more easily. They should find out how to use the template, write short instructions and discuss possible changes or improvements.

Development of the problem

 The students are shown a multi-colored logo that is to be made as a sticker using the vinyl cutter. The students discuss which technical problems need to be solved. They mention aspects such as:

–              Each color must be cut individually

–              Align several adhesive films precisely with each other

–              Accuracy when aligning and placing

 

 

 

Trying to solve the problem

Working in pairs, the students try to stick a given multi-colored graphic onto a sheet using the vinyl cutter

 A given svg file should be cut out with the vinyl cutter and multi-colored applied to a sheet of paper. The students discuss different possible solutions and try them out. Possible ideas from students:

 The students try to manually align the individual colors on the sheet by eye.

– The students try to manually align the individual colors on the transfer film by eye and then transfer them to the sheet

– The students first transfer a single-color negative of the motif onto the transfer foil and manually fill the gaps with colored foil elements.

 

 

 

Introducing solution

Students share how they can use a template and stencil to simplify and improve

The teacher shows an SVG file that, in addition to the multicolored motif, also contains alignment marker dots. A matching stencil ruler is also shown. Students are encouraged to think about how they could use these resources to solve their problem. Students make the multi-colored sticker a second time using the new resources.

Evaluation

The students compare the results and discuss advantages and disadvantages

The students discuss in small groups how they have used the new tools. They describe how they overcame difficulties and the benefits of working with the stencil rulers. They make suggestions on how to write instructions for working with the stencil. The students think about how the stencil could be improved. They make suggestions as to what type of multi-colored graphics the stencil can be usefully used for. The students discuss which multi-colored graphics and applications could reach its limits when using the stencil. 

Finally, the students discuss in which areas of technology alignment templates

are used and under what conditions the use of stencils makes sense.
