Summary

In this 1 hour long workshop, participants will be introduced to the concept of Mobile app development and how we can use technology to connect the new generation with their past. They will also discover the Thunkable platform, design the user-interface of the application, and program the logic of it.

The Instructions

Presentation

In the presentation, the participants will be learning about the concept of mobile app development and the purpose of behind the workshop, for around 15 minutes.

1- Who are we and what we do in Studio 56.

  • What is the meaning of a Fablab.
  • The different tools and machines found in a Fablab.
  • The different zones found in Studio 5/6: Technology zone, creativity zone, and software zone.

 

2- Intro to Microsoft Teams interface.

  • The meaning of every button showed on the screen.

 

3- Introduce the client letter.

  • Discuss the story behind this workshop; mobile app development and traditional Qatari games.
  • The importance of keeping the history alive through the new generations.
  • How we can connect the past to the present by creating a mobile application about traditional Qatari games.

 

4- The meaning mobile applications.

  • What is Mobile app design and development.

 

5- Video about the steps of developing a mobile application.

  • Discuss the output of the video with the participants.

 

6- What is paper-based prototyping.

  • Practice making a paper prototype of today’s mobile application.

 

7- Introduction to Thunkable platform.

  • What is Thunkable platform, and what is it used for.
  • Explain the user-interface of the platform.

 

8- What we will be doing today.

  • Build the prototype; a mobile application displaying different Qatari games.

Prototype

For the next 45 minutes, participants will be practicing on Thunkable platform, how to develop a mobile application from scratch.

1- Explain the UI of the Thunkable website and the structure of the platform.

2- Explain how you can add multiple screens to the application.

3- Explain how you can add different components to the screen and edit them.

4- Design the first screen (Start screen).

  • Add label and button components to the screen.
  • Edit the components to suit the theme of the application.
  • Add background image (Qatari theme).

 

 

5- Design the second screen (Catalogue screen).

  • Add arrangement components: rows and columns.
  • Add and edit buttons, images, labels.

  • Add background image (Qatari theme).

 

6- Program the buttons of the start and catalogue screens to navigate to the other screen.

 

7- Discuss further enhancements that can be done to the app.

  • (Fab-Design.2): I can participate in design reviews with prepared presentation materials as well as give and receive feedback from peers.
