Summary

This series of lessons will take you through step by step how to make a Tea Light Lantern using the Brother ScanNCut.

 

 

 

What You'll Need

Lamp:

  • Computer
  • Brother ScanNCut
  • Brother CanvasWorkspace
  • Brother ScanNCut Mats
  • Brother ScanNCut Weeding tools
  • Cardstock
  • Double sided tape
  • Glitter pens

 

Light

  • Battery operated tealight

 

Learning Objectives

By the end of these lessons, students will be able to create and design their own Lantern using the Brother ScanNcut.

Reflection

Choosing a simple design without too many intricate details is best to start with. Patterns make effective designs in the lantern.

The Instructions

Lesson 1

In this lesson, students will research and design their Lantern with Brother CanvasWorkspace. Students should already know how to use this program from a previous lesson.

Show students a design of a lantern that you have made. Ensure it is simple and shows design flaws that students will need to overcome. Students can either choose a picture or a pattern.

 

Explain to students that they will be designing their own Lantern over the next few weeks. This can include a top and bottom or just a 3D design.

 

Advise students that this Lesson is to design their Lantern, including choosing the colour of cardstock they wish to use.

 

 

Lesson 2

In this lesson, students will begin cutting their design out using the Brother ScanNCut.

Advise students that this lesson they will be cutting out their Lantern using the Brother ScanNcut. This may include weeding the intricut cuts.

Lesson 3

This lesson students are putting their Lanterns together. Students will run into design problems which they will begin solving.

Inform students they will be putting their lantern together.

 

Once students have completed this, give them ample time to show other students in their class what they have created.

 

Use this lesson to discuss with students any design problems they can see with the lantern design. As a class, discuss solutions thay may solve their design flaws.

 

Advise students they will have 2 more lessons to make alterations to their Lantern and solve any problems they may have.

Lesson 4-5

Students will have 2 lessons to improve and change the design of their Lantern.

Allow students time to improve and change their Lantern design. This can inlcude:

  • Design pieces are too small or intricate
  • Students dont like the colour of their Lantern
  • Lantern size too small/big
  • Add more/less panels
  • Add top/bottom panels
