Learning Objectives

By the end of these lessons, students will be able to design and create their own Christmas card that use multiple technologies and include digital components.

Reflection

This is not something I have done with students before, but rather something I have experimented and want to continue experimenting on in the future. It adds to create more engaging an exciting cards for those you are gifting them too.

The Instructions

Lesson 1

In this lesson, students will research and design their Christmas cards and any attachments they want to include. Please note this lesson is going off the basis you have already shown students how to use Brother CanvasWorksapce.

Begin by showing students a basic example of a Christmas card you have already made. Ensure it is paired back and shows design flaws that students will need to overcome.

Explain to students that they are going to design and code their own Christmas card over the next few lessons.

Inform students they have the rest of the lesson to design their card, including separating all their card stock colours within Brother CanvasWorkspace reading for printing.

Lesson 2

In this lesson, students will begin cutting their design out using the Brother ScanNCut. Students will also code their circuit playground express with any lights and sounds they require. Please note this lesson is going off the basis that students already have a basic understanding of coding, or have completed the tutorials on MakeCode.

Inform students that in this lesson they will be cutting out their Christmas card using the Brother ScanNCut.

While they are waiting for all their pieces to be cut, students can create their code using MakeCode. Remind students they will need to incorporate light and or sound into their cards to make them more interactive.

You can extend students by getting them to use JavaScript instead of black coding where required.

Lesson 3

This lesson students are putting their Christmas card together, including the circuit playground express which has been coded with battery pack attached. Students will run into design problem which they will begin solving.

Inform students they will be putting their Christmas card together, including the circuit playground express with battery pack attached.

Once students have completed this, give them time to show others within their class what they have created.

Have a class discussion with students regarding any design problems they can see within their Christmas card. As a class, also discuss any solutions they can come up with to fix their card.

Inform students they will have two more lessons to make iterations to their Christmas card to solve any design problems they have.

Lesson 4-5

Students will have two lessons to make changes to and improve their Christmas card.

Give students time to improve their Christmas card. This can include, put is not limited to:

  • Position of the circuit playground express.
  • Placement of the battery pack.
  • That both the circuit playground express and battery pack are visible.
  • Any light from the circuit playground express can not be seen through the card stock.
  • Not enough room has been given for writing.
  • Pieces of the Christmas card are too small.
  • Students don’t like the colours on their Christmas card.
