Our community is dedicated to democratizing digital fabrication during the COVID-19 pandemic. UNPLUGGED is our timely approach to digital fabrication learning that includes a curated lesson collection, community contributed lessons, virtual workshops and meetups, as well as printable resources for teachers and parents as they work with students at home.
we build community
Many in our community are without access to their Fab Labs during the pandemic. Our Covid-19 content including the UNPLUGGED Lesson Collection provides teachers and parents with learning opportunities in design, engineering, analog fabrication, and low tech electronics.
Our global community grows and stays connected through webinars, workshops, and meet-ups. Members of our community share their work with each other to learn new technologies, teaching approaches, and impactful projects.
Educational Resources
SCOPES-DF Reflection and Playbook
The Reflection and Playbook is written in response to the pressing need to provide academic coherence to the rapid growth and integration of artifact creation and digital fabrication concepts into K–12 classrooms. During the past decade, the Maker Movement in Education, designated as ‘Tinkering’, ‘Makerspaces’, ‘FabLearn Labs’, ‘Design-Make-Play’, ‘Maker-Centered Learning’, or Fab Labs, has increased usage of digital fabrication devices, such as 3D-printers, laser cutters, or milling machines in classrooms.
Fab I Can Statements
The Fab I Can Statements are a formative assessment tool that measures achievement and the digital fabrication learning experience intended for K-12.
The statements seamlessly connect classroom activities with benchmarked Fab teaching objectives, state and national learning standards, and with broad outcomes for life-long digital fabrication learning.
UNPLUGGED Lesson Collection
At home without access to digital fabrication machines? These community contributed lessons demonstrate project based learning opportunities when laser cutting or 3D printing isn’t an option. Check out our call for UNPLUGGED Lessons and contribute today!
The UNPLUGGED Lessons on our platform demonstrate learning opportunities with digital fabrication even without access to Fab Labs.

Virtual Workshops and Meetups
We host online events for our teacher and Fab Lab Network community members to share ideas, practices, and to connect through digital fabrication. Attend future events by becoming a SCOPES-DF community member.
Our virtual digital fabrication workshops and meetups keep hands and minds busy.

How are Educators connecting students with learning opportunities in the maker community’s response to the PPE shortage?
Fab Labs and makerspaces across the globe have mobilized to produce personal protection equipment (PPE) for frontline workers in this crisis. Within this new ecosystem of localized manufacturing, are there opportunities for students to participate or learn from this response? Educators and makers participated in a meetup to discuss possibilities, read the blog post here.
Fab Lab Network
Our network is our most valuable resource. It is an open, creative community of fabricators, artists, scientists, engineers, educators, students, professionals, of all ages located in more than 100 countries in approximately 1,800 Fab Labs.
