Summary

Electronics can be understood, after a concentrated study of concepts and the relationships between electronic components. The development of this understanding will empower students to design their own circuits for use with microcontrollers, such as Arduino.

What You'll Need

  • Resistors (many values)
  • Potentiometers
  • Breadboards
  • Multimeters
  • LEDs

The Instructions

Ohm's Law

Ohm's law controls the flow of electricity in a circuit. It is foundational knowledge needed to understand circuits of any type. Equally important is the idea of electrical power.

Calculate the current and power drawn through each of the resistors shown in each of these documents, in order

Voltage Dividers

Voltage dividers are an interesting circuit that can be used along with a microcontroller's analog input pins.

Read this document, and answer the contained questions:

Voltage dividers as inputs

Buttons as Digital Inputs

Buttons are a commonplace part of our lives. Understanding a button as an electrical switch, and why you need a pull-down or pull-up resistor is essential for the use of buttons with microcontrollers.

Read this document, and answer the contained questions:

Buttons (Switches) as inputs

Standards

  • (Fab-Electronics.1): I can follow instructions to build a simple electrical circuit using conductive material, basic components, and power.
  • (Fab-Electronics.2): I can follow a schematic diagram and create a circuit including a microcontroller with electronic components.
  • (Fab-Electronics.3): I can create my own schematic diagrams and use them to build electronic circuits including microcontrollers.
