Julie Sundar – 2024 Chevron Fab STEM Fellows

“In essence, my philosophy revolves around empowering women through skill development and practical application, ensuring that every individual, irrespective of background, has the chance to excel in digital fabrication and STEM fields.”

Meet 2024 Chevron Fab STEM Fellow Julie Sundar

Julie Sundar is the Chairwoman of Codettes Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering women in technology through mentorship and training programs in electronics, internet of things prototyping, embedded programming, and digital fabrication. With a degree in Digital Fabrication from Fab Academy 2019, she blends practical expertise with leadership experience, driving initiatives for diversity and inclusion in STEM fields. Her work at Codettes Foundation has been recognized for its impact on women’s empowerment in technology. Additionally, Julie has showcased her leadership skills as an alumna and graduate of the YLAI Young Leaders of America Initiative Program in 2022.

Winning Lesson

Our Codettes Bootcamp is an intensive one-year program designed to empower women (80%) and men (20%) by bridging the gender gap in STEM fields. Inspired by the FabAcademy model, our bootcamp integrates IoT (Internet of Things) technology and focuses on building solutions tailored to our local market. The bootcamp covers a wide range of topics and activities aimed at developing practical skills and fostering innovation. Here is an outline of the key components:

Project Management: Learning essential project management skills to effectively plan, execute, and monitor projects.

Video Production: Mastering video production techniques for effective communication and presentation of ideas.

Business Model Canvas: Understanding and developing business models using the Business Model Canvas framework

Pitch Deck: Creating compelling pitch decks to showcase ideas and attract stakeholders.

Project Poster: Designing informative and visually appealing project posters to summarize key concepts.

Computer-Aided Design (CAD): Using CAD software for 2D and 3D design to visualize and prototype ideas.

Computer-Controlled Cutting & Machining: Utilizing CNC machines and other computer-controlled tools for precision cutting and machining.

Electronics Design: Designing electronic circuits and systems using industry-standard tools and methodologies.

3D Printing: Utilizing 3D printing technology for rapid prototyping and product development.

Electronics Production: Learning techniques for mass production of electronic devices and components.

Embedded Programming: Programming microcontrollers and embedded systems for IoT applications.

Interface and Application Programming: Developing user interfaces and applications for interactive experiences.

IoT Stack: Understanding the IoT stack architecture and implementing IoT solutions.

Device/Hardware/Communication/Interface: Integrating devices, hardware components, communication protocols, and user interfaces for IoT solutions.

Group Assignment/Hackathon: Collaborating on group assignments and hackathon challenges to apply skills and solve real-world problems.

Codettes Final Project: Working on a final project that showcases comprehensive skills and innovation in STEM fields.

Final Exam: Assessing knowledge and skills through a comprehensive final exam.

Each component of our bootcamp is designed to provide hands-on experience, foster creativity, and encourage participants to develop innovative solutions for our local market. We are excited to share more about our program and the impactful projects that have earned recognition, such as the Chevron Fab STEM Fellowship.” The bootcamp is structured to ensure that students are well-prepared for the intensive program. We recommend starting with an entry-level program that covers the fundamentals of electronics, practical electronics using Arduino Uno, 3D designing, and embedded prototyping. This preliminary program helps students develop a strong foundation and practical skills before entering the bootcamp. To further enhance the learning experience, we have designed the curriculum to be modular. Students must complete required modules covering various aspects of electronics, programming, and design before advancing to the final project. This modular approach ensures that students’ skills are properly developed, giving them a better chance to complete the program successfully and on time.
Our goal is to provide a comprehensive and supportive learning environment that empowers participants to excel in STEM fields and contribute meaningfully to innovative projects.

Welcome to the Fellowship, Julie Sundar!
