The laser burns away a portion of material when it cuts through. This is known as the laser kerf.
During laser cutting, to a certain extent material is removed. Kerf refers to this material which is removed.
Knowledge and accommodation of the laser kerf is significant. When fitting the pieces of the laser cut pieces , we would want the joints to be fit tightly without the usage of glue.
We will be drawing a square of size 20mm by 20mm and laser cut it. Laser cut them and measure the internal and external diameter using a vernier calliper.
The kerf is (20.3 – 19.7) /2 = 0.3
